Aesthetic Gum Lift![]() Sometimes you have an issue with your smile that prevents you from smiling your brightest. Maybe your gums are a little too large for your teeth. You may also have a lot of tissue growth, due to genetics or medication. If you think you might benefit from smaller gums, let Encinitas Periodontics & Dental Implants give you information about aesthetic gum lifts. Why Do Some People Have A Lot of Gum Tissue?People can have excess gum tissue for many reasons. Sometimes having too much gum tissue is genetic. You may have noticed that family members also have the exact same gum tissue. You might also have too much gum tissue because of gum inflammation. Gum disease causes damage, and your inflamed gums could make it difficult for you to smile. If you get your gum disease treated, you may be able to reduce the size of your gum tissue. Medications may also cause your gum tissue to grow. Examples of medications that could cause your gum tissue to grow would include heart medications, immunosuppressive drugs and some anti-seizure medications. What is an Aesthetic Gum Lift? Not too long ago, people who need to have excessive gum tissue taken away used to have it taken off with a surgical instrument. Many of our patients didn’t like the procedure, because it involves cutting into your gum tissue with a surgical instrument - which means sutures and the possibility of inflammation or infection. Today, we can remove extra gum tissue with a dental laser. Laser gum removal means less swelling, bleeding and bruising, because we don’t use sutures when we use a laser. The heat from the laser kills the bacteria around the gums, which lowers your risk of infection. We can also use the laser without anesthesia because laser procedures are usually painless. Lasers even allow us to contour the gums to fit in with the size and shape of your face. Am I A Good Candidate for an Aesthetic Gum Lift?If you look in the mirror, and you see beautiful shiny teeth, you’re lucky. If you see a lot of gum tissue instead, you may need a gum lift. We use gum lifts all the time to help for people with uneven gums as well as excessive gum tissue. You are a good candidate for gum lifts if you have good overall health, as well as good oral health. If you are concerned that you might have gum disease, we can check your gums and then treat the disease first, then we can perform a gum lift.
