Does Having Dentures Or Dental Implants Eliminate The Threat Of Gum Disease?

After losing your teeth, you can opt for dental appliances like dentures or dental implants to replace them. These appliances help restore your smile and your teeth’s functionality. They function just like your natural teeth and make life significantly better. Therefore, having dentures or dental implants does not eliminate the threat of gum disease, just like having your natural teeth.

The Chances Of Getting Gum Disease

When you have dentures or dental implants and don’t maintain good oral health, you could develop gum disease. In fact, dental implant wearers could develop a form of gum disease known as peri-implantitis. This condition commonly occurs when excessive bacteria build up on the gum tissue around your dental implants. It could also accumulate around the bones supporting the implant.

Similarly, you can also develop gum disease when wearing dentures. If you don’t brush your teeth regularly and clean your gums, bacteria will build up and lead to gum disease. This is more likely to be the case, especially if you eat sugary foods and don’t clean after. Bacteria will start feeding on it and end up causing infections.

When gum disease starts developing, you will experience several signs. For instance, your gums will start bleeding, especially when brushing. They will also swell due to inflammation. In some cases, there is a foul smell from your mouth. When the condition advances, your dental implants will start loosening and might fall out completely.

To prevent the risks of gum disease, it is a good idea to adopt good flossing and brushing habits. This will help get your teeth and gums in good shape and prevent oral illnesses. You should also come to our offices for regular dental checks. It will help detect early signs of gum disease and treat them on time.
