Dental Consequences Of Periodontal Disease

Like other body parts, our mouth is also prone to infections. These infections can be due to numerous causes. One of the leading reasons for oral diseases is poor oral hygiene, which causes plaque and tartar build-up in the mouth. Among different oral infections, periodontal disease is there as well. It is also caused due to poor oral hygiene. It is an infection with adverse consequences and is treated through surgical and non-surgical methods.

Non-surgical methods comprise scaling and root planning, whereas surgical procedures comprise flap surgery, bone grafting, and guided tissue regeneration. For enhanced healing, tissue-stimulating proteins are also used. If not treated in time, it causes bleeding gums, recession and pocketing of the gums, bone and gum tissue loss, chewing problems, bad breath, and eventually, tooth loss. Bleeding Gums

Inflamed gums can be identified through swelling and redness at the gum line. This inflammation is a consequence of plaque and causes the blood vessels of the tissue to dilate.

These blood vessels feel tender and bleed on contact with any hard object like a toothbrush or a string of dental floss. This is the reason why individuals complain of spitting out blood when they brush their teeth.
This inflammation usually subsides if a proper oral hygiene routine is followed. If the bleeding and inflammation persist, it is recommended to get them examined.

Recession And Pocketing Of Gums

The bacteria build-up due to accumulated plaque and tartar can destroy the anchoring structure of the tooth. This structure not only supports the tooth but also keeps the gums tissue in place.

When destroyed, it causes the gums to loosen and for pockets to occur. Loosening causes gum recession as well, which makes the tooth look longer.

Bone Tissue Loss

Gum pockets accumulate tartar and bacteria in them. These bacteria damage the bone tissue underneath and cause the bone to lose its standard structure. The bacteria can also cause gum tissue loss. The lost systems are restored to some extent through regenerative procedures.

Chewing Problems And Bad Breath

Recessive gums and breakdown of the anchoring structure can cause the teeth to loosen as well. Loose teeth can cause problems when chewing food, and after eating, food particles can remain stuck in the spaces among the teeth, causing a dull pain.

The accumulation of plaque and tartar and bacteria build-up in the mouth can result in persistent bad breath because of its volatile sulfur compounds. Bad breath can only subside after an expert does professional cleaning.

Other Health Issues

The bacteria in the mouth can sometimes dispatch into the bloodstream. Periodontal bacteria are hard to fight against and can cause clot formation in different arteries and vessels. These clots can block any artery or vein in the brain or heart, leading to a stroke or cardiovascular disease.

Patients with periodontal disease are also at a high risk of developing diabetes and worsening of already existing diabetes. Periodontal bacteria also affect an expecting mother’s unborn child, causing the baby’s premature birth and low birth weight.

  My dentist found what appeared to be a growing cyst that needed to be surgically removed as well as have at least one tooth removed. I was recommended two periodontists. I decided to seek out one more consult as both consults just didn't sit well with me. Dr. Bembey's exam was world's different. She listened to my story, did a thorough examination (much more then either of the others), didn't require additional x-rays (where as one said they required it even though I had done a set just a few weeks prior). Additionally, she went further back in my records to realize that there was a strong chance that she wouldn't have to remove my tooth in surgery. Thank goodness. Now it's been a year - I have my tooth, got surgery to remove and test the cyst and have seen Dr. Bembey for multiple follow-ups. She is hands down the very BEST. I was emotionally exhausted from the search for a periodontist but am so grateful I went to her. I can't recommend her enough.

  I’ve never had any serious dental issues for 51 years, but a popcorn kernel changed all that. Dr. Bembey and her staff took care of the lengthening procedure required for my first crown. Dr. Bembey was very attentive and considerate compared to other doctors I’ve dealt with over the years. I regret that I have no plans to return to their office, but if I do I would go out of my way to insure she was my doctor. Thanks again to her and all the ladies in the office.   I recently had to get some gum grafting. I could not be more pleased by Dr. Bembey and her staff. My whole experience was seamless and the procedure, which I had feared, was not even painful. I highly recommend her expertise and nice demeanor. She is kind, calm and is an excellent periodontist. My before and after photos were amazing, proving her high level skills.   I had gum recession due to ortho I received as a teenager which was causing me a lot of pain. Dr. Bembey was extremely knowledgeable and one of the most compassionate doctors I've ever met. I had a gum graft procedure done here 2 years ago, and 2 years later it looks like the recession was never there to begin with. My gum pain is completely gone.
