Laser Dentistry

At Encinitas Periodontics & Dental Implants, we pride ourselves on using the latest techniques and cutting-edge dental technology to ensure you have a safe, effective, and comfortable experience. In recent years, laser dentistry has slowly become a staple in periodontics. For certain procedures, we use lasers, which are extremely focused light beams, to alter or remove tissue in small amounts. If you have never heard of laser dentistry, you are not alone. While it may be relatively unknown, laser dentistry offers some benefits that improve your experience at Encinitas Periodontics & Dental Implants.

Laser Use in Dentistry

Lasers can be used to treat some issues, most of which are related to the gums. Dr. Bembey may recommend laser treatment for:
• Canker or cold sore pain
• Gum reshaping and gum grafting
• Biopsies: Root canal infections
• Gum disease
• The removal of benign tumors
• The removal of excess throat tissue that causes sleep apnea
• The regeneration of damaged nerves
• Detecting cavities
• Preparing teeth for dental fillings
• Dealing with tooth sensitivity
• Accelerate tooth whitening procedures
• Expose partially erupted wisdom teeth

As technology continues to advance, so will the use of lasers in dentistry. Dental lasers have been used since the 1990s, and have proven to be safe and effective for some procedures, including scaling and root planning. If you choose to undergo laser treatment, know that you are in good hands. Dr. Bembey has participated in educational courses and received extensive training by the manufacturer. Although lasers are extremely safe, you will be asked to put on special eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser. Think of it like wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from overexposure to the sun.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry is becoming increasingly popular, because of its distinct benefits over other tools and appliances. Lasers can help procedures go more smoothly and even reduce your discomfort and healing time. Because there is less damage to your gum tissue, there is a quicker healing period. For instance, you are less like to need sutures because the laser cauterizes as it reshapes your tissue. In some cases, lasers can eliminate the need for local anesthetic. Lasers sterilize your gum tissue, which significantly reduces your chances of developing an infection. You are also likely to experience less bleeding than other traditional methods.

Types of Lasers Used in Dentistry

There are two main types of lasers that are used in dentistry today: hard tissue and soft tissue lasers. Each laser uses a different wavelength that alters the intensity of the beam and makes it suitable for that specific tissue. Soft and hard tissues absorb wavelengths in different ways. By using a specific wavelength for each tissue, we ensure a safe and successful procedure. Dr. Bembey uses a hard tissue laser for your tooth enamel. This type of laser can cut through bone and water with a precision unmatched by a traditional drill. Dental fillings and other shaping procedures have never been easier and more effective. Soft tissue lasers are unique because they cut and seal exposed blood vessels at the same time.
