Bone Regeneration

Rendering image of bone regeneration demonstrationDo you have periodontal disease? You’re in good company. Over 65 million Americans have gum disease. While many people have a milder form of gum disease - which is called stage one or periodontitis, there are also millions of Americans who have more serious forms of periodontal disease.

People who are suffering from the more serious form of periodontal disease called periodontitis may have begun to lose gum tissue. Our goal is always to prevent the loss of gum tissue due to periodontal disease. There are ways that we can work with you to regenerate your tissue and the underlying bone. This is done through a process called bone regeneration. Let Encinitas Periodontics & Dental Implants take a minute to give you some answers about bone regeneration.

What Happens During Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is another name for gum disease. This disease happens in three different stages. We call the first stage, gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, you may notice that your gums are inflamed, swollen and red. You may notice bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth. Gingivitis can be treated easily with better oral hygiene.

However, if you reach the second or third stage of the disease, your gums are infected. Bacteria has infected your gums, and that begins to cause damage at your gumline. The disease creates a space in between your teeth and your gums, and these spaces or pockets contain bacteria. When you come to us with stage two or three of periodontal disease, we can begin to heal your gums and restore them to health as much as we can. You need to know that in stage three of periodontal disease, the bacterial infection can do great damage to your teeth, gums, and bone structures - which could cause you to lose your teeth over time.

Can Bone Be Regenerated?

We can actually regenerate bone that is lost because of gum disease. The first step to regenerating bone is to make sure that your gums are free of infection. This may mean we need to move the gum tissue around to treat your infection. Once the infection is cleared up, and your mouth is healthier, we can do a bone graft.

Bone grafts can help regenerate both gum tissue and bone. We can move the gum tissue to place bone grafts along the area of your jaw that has been damaged by the disease. We can get bone from your mouth, somewhere else in your body, an animal bone, or a cadaver bone. Once we have placed the bone grafts in your jawbone, we use a membrane to protect the graft and to stimulate bone and tissue growth. This helps your body to regenerate its own bone and gum tissue more quickly.

If you are a good candidate for the bone regeneration procedure, you’ll be able to grow new bone and tissue. We can use bone regeneration technique to help regrow and maintain the health of your teeth, gums and jaws. If the procedure is a success, you can keep your teeth and gums healthier for many years to come, and we may be able to keep you from getting dentures or other restorative work.
