Who is Suitable for Dental Implants?

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Dr. Bembey and Dr. Yokoyama
Who is Suitable for Dental Implants?Dental implants are a permanent, natural-looking alternative to replace lost teeth. They are a great way for many patients to improve their appearance, smile, and restore functionality. Despite this, some individuals may not find dental implants to be the best tooth replacement choice because they need surgery. If not treated, missing teeth can lead to prolonged oral health issues. For instance, they can cause the jawbone shrinks, the gums to recede, the surrounding teeth to be damaged, and the chance of developing gum disease increases. However, not all people are good candidates for dental implants. For you to qualify for dental implants, you must have:

Strong, Health Gums

Dental implants' success is dependent on the condition of the gum tissue that surrounds them. Your risk for complications may increase if you have gum disease or another periodontal condition. Before getting dental implants, diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, should be treated.

Sufficient Bone Density

Dental implants are inserted into the jaw and heavily supported by the surrounding bone. The efficacy of your implant-supported restoration depends on having enough jawbone tissue.

Good Oral Health

Another essential quality of a good candidate for dental implants is a healthy, well-maintained mouth. Additionally, you must devote yourself to thorough at-home maintenance and routine dental exams. Additionally, your general health must be good because restoring your smile requires at least one surgical procedure.

Who Doesn't Qualify for Dental Implants

Compared to non-smokers, patients who smoke have a higher risk of dental implant failure. For this reason, dentists might demand that their clients refrain from smoking before getting dental implants. Also, pregnant women should not receive implants. Instead, they should wait until they deliver to undergo the procedure. Dental implants are not a good option for people undergoing or who have previously undergone radiation therapy to the face and neck.
