What to Know Before Getting a Gum Graft

Posted on 4/25/2022 by Dr. Bembey and Dr. Yokoyama
What to Know Before Getting a Gum GraftA gum graft is an oral procedure we perform on patients with receding gums. It is a complex procedure that involves the removal of tissues of the palate or any other suitable body parts and grafting them onto the missing gum. In some cases, we might get tissues from a donor if our body doesn't have sufficient tissues. If you consider getting a gum graft, there are several things you should know. This guide discusses some of them.

Important Details You Should Know

When undergoing oral surgery, patients don't have much to do. However, several important things should be done before the surgery. Our dentists will walk you through the procedure to avoid doubt. Before the process starts, we take details of the level of recession. We shall also ask you if you have had a wound in your mouth in the past week. This is helpful because it is not ideal for performing a gum graft to an individual with mouth wounds.

It would help if you stocked up on soft foods you would use during the recovery process. This is necessary because we might fit a palatal stent in your mouth — it protects the donor side of your mouth. As a result, you will not feel pain or discomfort when eating. What you should focus on is addressing the root cause of gum recession. Please give us the reasons you think contributed to the development of gum recession. For instance, if it is due to the consumption of acidic drinks, let us know. This will make it easier for us to administer treatment.

It would help if you also avoided such activities after the surgery. Refrain from acidic foods and beverages because it can result in gum recession again. Schedule a consultative appointment with us for more information on what you should know before getting a gum graft.
