Preparing Yourself For Periodontal Surgery

Posted on 11/22/2021 by Dr. Bembey and Dr. Yokoyama
Preparing Yourself For Periodontal SurgeryIf your periodontist determines that you have a serious gum infection, you might need to undergo a surgical procedure in order for your oral health to improve. Apart from discussing your surgical options and recovery process, your periodontist will also help you properly prepare for your periodontal surgery.

How to Prepare for Surgery

Make sure to share all the drugs you are taking with us prior to your procedure. This is because the preparation process for your periodontal surgery may need you to stop taking certain medications such as aspirin, pain relievers, and blood thinners.

Be sure to open up any of your concerns to us, especially with regards to your medical history or personal health condition, since it might affect the outcome of the surgery. We will most likely recommend you to stop smoking or drinking alcohol for at least a day prior to your surgery, as this can impair your recovery.

If you elect to use pill sedation or IV sedation for your surgery, make sure to arrange a plan to go home safely. Driving home on your own after receiving a sedative or anesthesia from your surgery is a bad idea, as you may still be feeling groggy after the procedure, so the best idea would be to have a close relative or friend drive you home. We will also possibly give you an antibiotic to take before the surgery to lower your chances of getting an infection.

Considering that it might take days before the discomfort from your oral surgery goes away, it would be a great idea to stock up on ice in your freezer. Make sure to also ask us about what you should and should not eat since chewing certain foods might slow down your recovery.

These are the things that you need to consider to fully prepare for your periodontal surgery. However, do not forget to also follow your periodontist's specific instructions. If you want to know more, contact our office for more information on periodontal surgery.

This Doctor is a true healer!

I had a wonderful opportunity to see Dr. Bembey! She really knows her stuff! I felt like she had my best interests in mind and she took her time and listened with an open mind and an open heart. I have some really tough dental issues, and she completely understood everything that I was going through and was able to guide me in the right direction. So great full of for her kindness and compassion.
