When Does Gum Disease Become Painful?

Posted on 6/7/2021 by Dr. Yokoyama
When Does Gum Disease Become Painful?Unfortunately, gum disease starts feeling painful the longer you let it go. In the first stages, you may not even notice any pain. That is why people tend to ignore it. They tell themselves that their bleeding gums are normal and do not have to worry about it.

When Things Become Worse

If you ignore treatment, or the early stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, it will progress to advanced gum disease, called periodontitis. When this happens, things start to become painful. The teeth are often swollen, red, and tender, and it hurts to bite down and chew. At this point, we must take drastic measures to slow down the spread of the infection. This may include gum flap surgery, which helps us clean away the tartar by a process known as scaling and root planing (SRP). We may also have to perform a gum graft procedure to regenerate the gingival tissue and cover the areas of recession.

See Us Before Things Get Worse

If you currently have bleeding gums but do not have pain – you want to plan now, not later, to schedule an appointment to visit us. We will perform a comprehensive periodontal evaluation (CPE) to check the depth of your gingival pockets and determine the extent of your gum disease. Once we do this, we can perform the proper therapy to revive the gum tissue and reduce the possibility of complications, such as an infection or the development of other emergency health conditions, including pain, a fever, or respiratory distress.

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? If so, you need to schedule a CPE with us right away. Take action now so you won't have to deal with gum disease in its advanced form later. We can book a time that will conveniently work with your schedule. Call us today to calendar an appointment time.

This Doctor is a true healer!

Dr. Bembey is truly a healer. Not one of those Doctors who is in it for the money. You can tell that she loves her job. She actually made it enjoyable, and I don’t normally think of gum surgery as something to enjoy. She is very knowledgeable, and her skills are awesome! She communicates well and tells you small details that really help a lot. And she is there for you if you need her. Most importantly, she saved me from loosing my teeth! This Doctor is a GEM!!! I highly recommend her.
