Tips for Getting the Most Out of Scaling and Root Planing

Posted on 12/21/2020 by Dr. Yokoyama
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Scaling and Root PlaningTo get the most out of a scaling and root planing (SRP), you need to understand more about the process. We usually recommend an SRP when a patient has advanced periodontal disease. The cleaning removes hard tartar and calculus below the gum line and from the roots, so the gums can reattach themselves to the tooth. This type of treatment is considered to be a deep clean. Therefore, after you have an SRP, it is important to follow a routine of regular bruising twice a day as well as flossing daily.

Getting the Full Benefit of an SRP

To ensure your SRP is successful, you will need to follow our after-care instructions and be careful about what you eat and drink. Do not eat any hard-to-eat or tough foods right after an SRP. Instead, choose softer foods until chewing is more comfortable. It is also important, in your daily diet, to avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods, such as popcorn, ice cubes, chips, and nuts. Steer clear of acidic foods and drinks such as tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit juice, or wine. Highly seasoned foods can also increase sensitivity. If you currently smoke and are planning an SRP, it is better to quit the habit altogether. Smoking will only delay healing, so you should make efforts to quit. Getting an SRP gives you a second chance at keeping your teeth and gums in tip-top shape. To make the most of your SRP, you should follow a conscientious program of dental hygiene at home and professionally.

Do you believe you need an SRP? If so, set an appointment with us to have a comprehensive periodontal exam (CPE). Take measures now to do everything you can to preserve your natural smile. We can help you get into the habit of brushing twice a day and flossing. When you make a commitment to brushing and flossing, you will improve the prognosis for the health of your teeth and gums.
