How do Gums Change Into Our Senior Years?

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr. Yokoyama
How do Gums Change Into Our Senior Years? As our bodies age, things change. Our mouths are no different. Just as our teeth change and our oral health needs change so do our gums. Even with proper care, brushing and flossing regularly, gums can recede as we age. This is a common occurrence and should not alarm patients. This is concerning, however because as the gum recedes, it exposes the root of the tooth and leaves pockets for bacteria to collect leading to gingivitis which is a stepping stone for gum disease. If a patient brushes too hard over a lifetime this can lead to gum receding too, although periodontal disease is the leading cause.

While gingivitis is the earliest form of gum disease, periodontitis is the most severe, leading to tooth loss and potential bone loss. Gingivitis starts when plaque and tartar are not routinely removed and cause gum irritation. This can lead to an infection, which can turn into gum disease which is incurable and has to be managed for a lifetime by scheduling maintenance cleanings every three to four months indefinitely.

Changes in Oral Health

Our cells regenerate at a slower rate, meaning recovery time will be longer following dental procedures. Tissues are less resilient than they once were and begin to thin out. Bones lose mass and grow weaker, more brittle and the immune system can become weak, leading to more frequent infections with less ability to fight them off.

Dry mouth is a common problem in older adults too. Without saliva washing away leftover food particles from between the teeth it can lead to tooth decay and gum inflammation.

Older adults sometimes grow lazy in their oral care regiments which can lead to tooth decay and weakened gums. They can be afraid to have their teeth cleaned. Smoking and diabetes can affect gum tissue, making it less resilient in fighting off infection. If you want to know more about your gums, you can give us a call.

This Doctor is a true healer!

I had a wonderful opportunity to see Dr. Bembey! She really knows her stuff! I felt like she had my best interests in mind and she took her time and listened with an open mind and an open heart. I have some really tough dental issues, and she completely understood everything that I was going through and was able to guide me in the right direction. So great full of for her kindness and compassion.
