How to Prepare For Periodontal Surgery?

Posted on 6/5/2023 by Dr. Bembey and Dr. Yokoyama
How to Prepare For Periodontal Surgery?Periodontal surgery is a dental surgery done for people with periodontal disease. This procedure aims to ensure you have healthy gum tissues and prevent damage to the teeth and surrounding gum tissues. If your dentist has recommended periodontal surgery, you can prepare in the following ways:

Stop Smoking

Smoking is known to delay your healing process after surgery. Ensure you stop smoking a few weeks before the procedure. Even after the surgery, don't resume smoking until the healing process is complete.

Medical History and Physical Examination

A surgeon needs to take your medical history and check your oral health before the surgery. Physical examination checks the health of your gums and teeth and determines the extent of the condition. With the medical history, an oral surgeon will understand if you have any underlying illness. The specialist must ensure you are not at any risk during the surgery.

Some medications may interfere with your healing process. Ensure you discuss with your surgeon about any drugs you are taking. They will recommend if you need to stop them or not. Drugs such as blood thinners will increase bleeding during the procedure and must be avoided. However, some drugs might not have any significant effect.

Diagnostic Tests

If you are preparing for periodontal surgery, the surgeon must ascertain the extent of the oral disease. Through x-rays and blood tests, they can clearly understand your condition and professionally manage you.

Eat Healthy Diet

Eating a nutrient-rich diet weeks before the surgery will boost your immune system. It would be best to be cautious of your diet during the healing period to ensure a successful healing process. It would be best to avoid caffeine and alcohol days before the surgery. When you are on a healthy diet you are likely to recover faster from the surgery. Choose a diet with all nutrients for a better outcome.
