How Is Gingival Enlargement Addressed?

Posted on 8/23/2021 by Dr. Bembey and Dr. Yokoyama
How Is Gingival Enlargement Addressed?Gingival enlargement refers to an increase in the size of your gums. This condition is a common sign of gingival disease. Gingival enlargement is caused by a wide range of factors, including inflammation and the effects of certain medications. If you have this condition, there are several ways we can treat it.

Treating Gingival Enlargement

Treating a condition is mostly determined by the underlying cause. In most cases, the signs of gingival enlargement can be prevented or improved by good oral hygiene. However, you might have to undergo oral surgery if the gingival enlargement is a result of medication or disease.

It is important to note that gingival enlargement can be a recurrent problem, no matter the improvements in oral hygiene. It can also still occur even after getting treatment. In such cases, the enlarged gums will have to be removed surgically. If you come to our offices with such as case, we will perform this surgery with advanced technology.

One common way is through electrosurgery. Our professionals will apply electric current to the enlarged gum tissues during an electrosurgery procedure and safely remove them. Another common method is laser excision. In this method, we will use lasers to get rid of inflamed gum tissues. Once the tissues are removed, our professionals scrape away any plaque buildup that could cause gum disease. This helps keep your gums clean and healthy.

Alternatively, we can also suggest a periodontal flap surgery. In this procedure, the gums are separated from teeth. They are folded back briefly to allow room to eliminate inflamed gum tissues. They will also get rid of tartar or plaque. This is important because the presence of plaque could lead to future reinfections. All these surgeries are effective and will be used depending on the nature of your gingival enlargement. Contact our offices for more information on gingival enlargement.
