Untreated Abscesses Can Result in High Chances of Tooth Loss

Posted on 7/12/2021 by Dr. Yokoyama
Untreated Abscesses Can Result in High Chances of Tooth LossIf a tooth infection or cavity is left to its own devices, there may be a lot of loss that comes with it. Cavities or cracked teeth are the best places for the bacterium to work its way into our bodies, so having those open areas should be a red alert for most people. Some infections can result in the death of a tooth, requiring extraction—but other times, the infection can spread, resulting in infection throughout the mouth, requiring more extractions, or it can get into your blood, requiring a trip to the hospital.

What Causes an Abscess?

Untreated cavities are the cause of abscesses. Sometimes, cavities will grow and encompass an entire tooth, killing it without an abscess occurring. But other times, a cavity will be triggered by something, and it will form an abscess that needs attention. If you do get an abscess, it is necessary that you come in to see us immediately, because while it can give you discomfort because it is sensitive and filled with fluid, that fluid is infected and needs to be properly drained before it gets into your system. In some cases, abscesses will break before the patient can get into our office, and in those cases, we still recommend you come in so that we can assess the issue and make a plan now that the infection is no longer contained.

Contact Us Immediately If You Think You Have an Abscess

Taking care of our patients is our first and primary concern. If you believe that you may have an abscessed tooth or you could be getting one—or you have one which has broken, we suggest you call us immediately. Tooth infections are no laughing matter, and we are here to support you through the process.

This Doctor is a true healer!

Dr. Bembey is truly a healer. Not one of those Doctors who is in it for the money. You can tell that she loves her job. She actually made it enjoyable, and I don’t normally think of gum surgery as something to enjoy. She is very knowledgeable, and her skills are awesome! She communicates well and tells you small details that really help a lot. And she is there for you if you need her. Most importantly, she saved me from loosing my teeth! This Doctor is a GEM!!! I highly recommend her.
