Untreated Gum Disease Is Connected to Increased Weight

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Dr. Yokoyama
Untreated Gum Disease Is Connected to Increased WeightGum disease and increased weight can be interrelated. That is because people who have gum disease often eat foods that do not promote gum health. These same foods cause them to put on weight and suffer from conditions, such as high cholesterol.

Why You Cannot Ignore Gum Disease Therapy

Gum disease progresses over time. Therefore, having the condition treated should be made a priority. Once we decide on a treatment approach, we can also give you tips on eating healthier foods to reduce future gum problems. Typically, we will recommend a deep cleaning, such as a scaling and root planing (SRP) and encourage you to follow a regular daily routine of brushing and flossing. Brushing at least twice a day (for 2 minutes) and flossing once a day is as important as what you choose to eat.

Losing Weight and Maintaining Healthier Teeth and Gums

People with healthier teeth and gums also eat foods that are more dental-friendly. Foods that cause tooth decay and gum disease also can cause patients to put on weight. These foods may include processed items, such as chips or packaged cookies. Foods that contain corn syrup or refined flour also leads to weight gain and dental problems. However, when patients follow a routine plan of regular dental care and eat healthier, they improve their gum health and also slim down.

Healthy Foods that Lead to Better Gum Health and a Healthier Weight

Periodontal patients who eat foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and proteins, such as fish, nuts, or beans, experience better gum health and a reduction in weight. That is because these foods are more nutritious and contain fewer calories. Foods containing refined sugar often cause tooth decay and gum disease and lead to weight gain over time.

This Doctor is a true healer!

Dr. Bembey is truly a healer. Not one of those Doctors who is in it for the money. You can tell that she loves her job. She actually made it enjoyable, and I don’t normally think of gum surgery as something to enjoy. She is very knowledgeable, and her skills are awesome! She communicates well and tells you small details that really help a lot. And she is there for you if you need her. Most importantly, she saved me from loosing my teeth! This Doctor is a GEM!!! I highly recommend her.
